Diabulimia, the Eating Disorder You’ve Never Heard Of

In my 32 years practicing as a Registered Dietitian I have definitely seen the incidence of this practice increasing! Like the article states, this takes a treatment team including a Therapist & a Registered Dietitian to help the person get back to a balanced relationship with food!  Disordered eating is when someone starts to shift from a healthy relationship with food to using food or eating to cope with something in their life.  This can be a very slippery slope where the person thinks they are in control but then before they realize it, they have lost control over it and it is now running their life.  No one wakes up one morning and thinks, “Hm, I think I will develop an eating disorder today!”  Everyone thinks they can just do this behavior until they get the results they want (like losing weight) but then it gradually takes over their thinking and their life.  The critical part is to get professional help as soon as possible.  The quicker someone gets help, the easier and faster it typically is for them to get back to a normal, healthy relationship with their food and eating.
